Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audits are voluntary audits that verify risks of microbial food safety hazards are minimized
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2002 has implemented the GAP and GHP audit verification program. It is a voluntary program offered to the fruit and vegetable industry to verify an establishment’s efforts to minimize the risk of contamination by microbial pathogens. It covers fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
The program does not guarantee the food is free of microbial contamination, but verifies that the facility has taken measures to reduce the risk of contamination by adhering to best practices recognized by industry standards. While the audit is performed by the USDA, the responsibility of food safety rests with the organization.
The USDA GAP Audit Services include:
• USDA Harmonized GAP Audit
• USDA GAP Audit
• GroupGAP
• Mushroom GAP
• California LGMA

"Safe Food Resources helped lay the foundation for our Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) program. Through ongoing consultations and resources such as the e-learning trainings, Pure Farms was able to obtain GAP status. She was able to help from the initial meeting all the way through the day of the audit. They are an excellent resource for us, and we look forward to working with them in the future!"
